Hello Ed-Psychers!

Hope you've all enjoyed your breaks and are ready to tackle a new semester filled once again, with many intellectually stimulating events. Here's a little recap of what we did last semester, followed by an overview of what's in store for you this semester!

The Brown Bag events in Fall 2011 were simply amazing, with the wealth of knowledge that faculty members and fellow colleagues openly shared....a lively discussion about self-regulated learning with Drs. Sig Tobias and Heidi Andrade; a heated discussion on the parenting styles of Tiger Moms with Drs. Joan Newman and David Dai; an informative presentation on growth and value-added modeling with Zach Warner; and an inspiring panel discussion on grant writing with Drs. Debi May, Bruce Saddler and Kristie Saddler. Additionally, the annual Apple Picking Fall Picnic was held in collaboration with the Turkish Student Association at Indian Ladder Farms and Thatcher State. Alongside, the RGSO also organized a "Help Schoharie" community service to collect school supply donations. Whew, a lot eh?!

Expect no less this semester, as our RGSO has made plans for more exciting events...including a future peer review session, giving a place for students to share and talk about research ideas; a session on collective knowledge with Dr. Zhang; a presentation on academic writing process with Drs. Saddler; and revisiting the heated discussion on Tiger Moms with Drs. Joan Newman and David Dai. As for a more non-academic event, there's a movie night in the planning!

P.S. Oh...the next time you see an RGSO member, stop them and give them a thanks..for all their hard work in making these experiences and opportunities possible!

Grant Writing Brown Bag--Inspirational and motivational

Hello All,

Last Wednesday's Brown Bag on Grant Writing presented by Drs. Bruce Saddler, Kristie Saddler, and Debi May, with valuable added comments from Dr. Frank Vellutino, has...in words of our RGSO president "informed, encouraged and inspired the students" with their expertise, experience, and enthusiasm on this topic. Unfortunately, I was not able to take any pictures of this wonderful event, but I think all can agree, the information shared with us that day is much more valuable.

That said, seeing that many students were not able to make it to the event, and with the motivation and inspiration accumulated from the presentation, I have taken the liberty to create a little overview of what I have gathered and understood about grant writing. It is taking me a bit longer than expected to finish this, but please check back in the next week or two, and a link will be provided!

Thanks Drs. Bruce Saddler, Kristie Saddler, and Debi May for an exceptional, information-filled presentation, and thank you Dr. Frank Vellutino for sharing your words of wisdom!

Value-added modeling, a concept borrowed from economics,

is becoming an increasingly popular tool for evaluating teachers.

Can these models paint an accurate picture of teacher quality?

Zach Warner will give an overview of how growth and value-added

models are used in teacher evaluation. His experience with the NYS SGP

model and current issues surrounding this topic will be discussed.

Thanks to our colleague, Yehan, pictures are available here of our Wednesday's Brown Bag event on Tiger Mom. It's been said that this one broke record for highest attendance! The complexity of the topic of what good parenting should be brought in an hour and a half of intense and deep conversation with varying thoughts and opinions on Tiger Mom's strict ways.

With attendees showing high interest on this topic, we are planning for a Tiger Mom Part 2 for next semester, so be sure to keep a look out for this!

Hello Gang!

Click here to check out the pictures of this year's fall outing! Great turnout from both EdPsy and Turkish Student Association. A nice variety of deliciousness--BBQ, chips and dip, Turkish desserts, hot apple cider, and the list goes on. A tad chilly, but the sun partied with us throughout. I think it's safe to say, the 2011 fall outing was a huge success.

Vellutino Named Distinguished Professor

• achievement, aptitude, intelligence, reading, and personality tests.
• reference resources (e.g., the Mental Measurement Yearbook and The Test Critiques);
• statistics and measurement books;

The Test Library materials are available for use by both staff and students.

Open Hours: The test library operates under an ‘on demand’ system in which the library is only opened by appointment.

Division faculty Professor Frank R. Vellutino will be inducted into the International Reading Association's Reading Hall of Fame at the forthcoming IRA Annual Conference. The IRA Reading Hall of Fame consists of nationally and internationally prominent reading researchers who are recognized as having made extraordinary contributions to theory and research in the study of literacy acquisition.

Grant News

Division faculty Professors Dianna L. Newman and Deborah Kundert were featured in a news item by the UAlbany School of Education for their evaluation grant.

Dianna Newman and Deborah Kundert received $1.3 million for a four-year Evaluation of the Striving Readers project for the New York State Education Department. This money was provided from the U.S. Department of Education through a grant from the NYS Education Department. The NYS Education Department and the New York City Department of Education Striving Readers Program will provide explicit, targeted and engaging supplemental instruction in vocabulary, comprehension strategies, writing, fluency and word analysis to sixth and seventh grade students who are struggling readers in nine New York City Public Middle Schools. The purpose of the study is to determine the effectiveness of the supplemental literacy intervention program on student achievement in literacy as measured by the NYS English Language Arts (ELA) assessment and the Gates-MacGinitie Reading Assessment.

Distinguished Alumnus

Richard Lehrer, an EdPsych alumnus who is currently a professor of science education at Vanderbilt University Peabody College, has been selected to receive American Psychological Association's 2009 Award for Distinguished Contributions of Applications of Psychology to Education and Training during APA's annual convention in Toronto, Canada.

A 1983 graduate of the division, Professor Lehrer is a faculty member at the Department of Teaching and Learning in the College of Education and Human Development at Vanderbilt. His research is focused on children's mathematical and scientific reasoning in the context of schooling and student inquiry and the semiotics of inscription.

Professor Lehrer's award will be presented at 4 pm on August 7, in the Concert Hall of the Fairmont Royal York Hotel.

Dr. David Yun Dai, a division faculty, is featured at the home page of UAlbany Web site for his study in China as a Fullbright Scholar.

The UAlbany news story states that "Dr. Dai is conducting teacher surveys on inquiry-based learning in China as part of the country's educational reform efforts. Dai, an associate professor in the Department of Educational and Counseling Psychology, will meet with more than 50 senior high school principals who are pioneering a new round of curriculum reform in China. Dai will share his experiences and perspectives on U.S. education reform, as well as discuss implementation, obstacles and other potential issues."

GSO Awards EdPsy Students

UAlbany Graduate Student Organization (GSO) awarded Educational Psychology Students with the "2008 GSO Most Professionally Enriching RGSO Award" for organizing various educational and academic events, collaborating with various GSO committees and university offices to improve programming capacity and quality, and utilizing creative ways of outreach and advertising.

EdPsy RGSO president Tony Leonardi (R) and vice president Kristina Mycek (L) received the award from Dr. Ray Bromley, Director of the Office of International Education, at the GSO End-of-Year Gala and Award Ceremony held at a cruise on Hudson River on Sunday afternoon of May 4th, 2008.

EdPsy RGSO thanks GSO and the award committee for their decision and looks forward to organizing more activities to contribute to UAlbany community.

After successful completion of her PhD in educational psychology, former EdPsy Students president (06-07) Kristie Asaro is appointed as a visiting assistant professor in the Division of Special Education within the Department of Educational and Counseling Psychology starting Spring 2008 semester.

Dr. Asaro’s research looks at students with autism spectrum disorders and strategy instruction. Classes she teaches are ESPE 560 Introduction to Human Exceptionality, ESPE 564 Participation in and Study of English Language Arts and Social Studies Program, ESPE 565 Participation in and Study of Math, Science and Technology Programs, ESPE 580 Practicum: Teaching Students with Disabilities, ESPE 650 Educational Environments for Preparing Students with Disabilities to Meet the Learning Standards: Childhood and Middle Childhood Levels, and ESPE 680 Internship: Teaching Students with Disabilities at the Childhood and Middle Childhood Levels.

PhD Program in Top 10

Educational Psychology PhD program is ranked as the top 10th Educational Evaluation & Research program in the United States at the 2006-2007 Faculty Scholarly Productivity Index top performing individual programs list prepared by Academic Analytics.

According to a news story by UAlbany School of Education, "rankings were based on the index for ranking doctoral programs launched by Academic Analytics last year. The index evaluates over 7,400 doctoral programs in 172 disciplines in 375 institutions. It also ranks institutions in broader categories, such as humanities and biological sciences, as well as institutions as a whole. Index findings were released in the Nov. 16 issue of The Chronicle of Higher Education."
